Playing In Other People's Sandboxes

I was playing in shared universes long before my own Shadowlands came along; there are a number of exceptionally good ones out there, and I was fortunate enough to get to know the wriers behind a couple of them, and get their permission to 'play in their sandboxes'.

See something you like? Check out the rest of the shared universe; you might find yourself getting lost in it. You could always send me some feedback, too.-- Alicia

Kai and Logan

Kaylee's Kai is one of those wonderful characters that seems like she's always been there in the X-universe, and was merely neglected until Kaylee started writing. Kai fits into the lives of the X-Men perfectly, and her interactions with the various characters are a joy to behold. Check out the Tag Team page on Fonts Of Wisdom for the whole series. The stories below are my contribution; I love the way Kai and Cable and Dom interact, and I do have at least one more on the to-write list, one of these days. ;)--Alicia

Not only can Alicia create her own worlds, she also is very adept at visiting others. Kaylee's Kai is one of fan-fictions most fascinating original characters. The interaction between Kai, Logan, Nate, and Domino, is wonderful. The characters play off of each other so well. Must have something to do with the talent of the writer. :) ~ JenMorrioghan

The Grudge Match Of The Century
(PG)
When a stray Sentinel attacks the mansion and Cable uses Logan's motorcycle as 'ammunition', he and Logan clash, with an amused Domino and Kai looking on. This isn't quite sillyfic, but it was meant to be humorous more than anything else. It was also my introduction to the K&L genre.

Raven Skies
1 2 3 Epilogue
(PG-13)
Cable vanishes mysteriously, and a worried Domino goes first to Logan and Kai, and then to her old friend G.W. Bridge for help. A very different sort of story than 'Grudge-Match', and more Cable-focused. This is also one of the stories where I've trotted out my by-now 'patented' take on thirty-eighth century society and customs.

Stargazers
(PG)
Not long after the events of Raven Skies, Kai and Cable share an...astronomical experience. A coda to 'Raven Skies', written for Kaylee. It's always nice to let my descriptive tendencies loose and let the imagery run riot.

X-S: Growing Up X

Darqstar's 'Growing Up X' series was one of the first and still is one of the best-known shared universes in X-Men fan fiction. Siku is one of those rare original characters that's taken on a life of her own, and wormed her way into the affections of a huge number of people. Some of us were very fortunate to be in fan fiction and writing at the time that Darqstar was accepting X-S stories, and I was quick to notice that (at that point) no one had yet introduced Cable in any substantial role into the X-S 'universe'. Thus, these two stories were born, and they still hold a very special place in my heart. :)--Alicia

These stories demonstrate yet again who nicely Alicia plays with others. :) ~ JenMorrioghan

X-S: A Shoulder To Cry On
(PG)
After the birth of her cousin Rachel, an out-of-sorts Siku receives comfort from a very unexpected source--her cousin Nathan. One of my earliest short stories, and rather dear to me, since it examines the feelings of both adopted children and those estranged from a parent.

X-S: A Winter's Tale
(PG)
After a difficult day at school and stresses at home, Siku finds her heart lightened when she shares a very special experience with her cousins Nathan and Rachel. A few months after I started writing fanfic, I wrote a much inferior version of this and sent it to Darqstar. She, being wonderful, took the time to send me back detailed comments. It wasn't easy on my ego, but the rewrite I did was several orders of magnitude better. I keep this story in mind, when I get criticism that stings my ego, to remind me that it's always worth it, and I can always do better.

A Crazy Kinda Way To Spend The Afternoon
(PG-13)
(Tied to Kaylee's 'Mooks' series.) Cable, Iceman, and Gambit are captured by rogue Genoshan magistrates, and spend a very edifying afternoon in a cell together. Written for Kaylee as a birthday present, and mostly sillyfic. These three characters play off each other very well; it was very enjoyable to write, even above and beyond the cute one-liners that popped into my mind during the process.
Set in the world of Kaylee's Mooks, this tongue-in-cheek tribute is guaranteed to make you smile. ~JenMorrioghan
