The Psi-War, where all of Marvel's telepaths
lost their abilities at the hands of the Shadow King, was a brilliant idea
with lousy follow-through. Just my humble opinion, of course. ;) A
challenge to OTL to show the aftermath and a second challenge to write a
happy Christmas story combined to help me produce this
trilogy.--Alicia
This trilogy is beautifully written, and
demonstrates clearly how well Alicia can creep into her characters' minds.
Not only that, but the conclusion is happy, in an ever so Nate and Dom,
sort of way. :) ~JenMorrioghan
Never
(PG)
Thousands of miles apart, their link broken by the
Psi-War, Cable and Domino reflect on their relationship during a sleepless
night. Posted originally as two stories to OTL, 'Strength Of Will' and 'Depth Of Faith'; my first OTL stories, as a matter of fact. Above all this is a characterization piece, my first in- depth vignette-style examination of my favorite characters.
The End Of Magic
(PG)
After the Psi-War, Cable runs into Betsy Braddock, and
the two of them talk about the changes in their lives since her battle with
Farouk on the astral plane. A spur of the moment piece that received an enormous amount of feedback on OTL, maybe because it was an 'odd couple' sort of story. I don't believe Cable and Psylocke have ever interacted one-on-one in canon, which is a shame.
If The Fates Allow
(PG)
At Christmas, still suffering the effects of the loss
of his telepathy and exhausted from the ordeals of the past months, Cable
finds his burdens lightened by an unexpected reunion. My Christmas 1998 story. Wouldn't it have been wonderful if Marvel had really done something like this? Definitely wish-fulfillment on my part.
Anniversary
(PG-13)
Sequel to Promise. On the one-year anniversary
of Tyler's death, Logan follows an impulse to visit his grave in Kentucky,
only to encounter Cable there. I never liked the 'resolution' Marvel showed us between Cable and Logan, so I wrote my own. Realistically, I don't think the damage done to their already shaky relationship by Tyler's death could be repaired by a few words over beer.
Some stories are simply so good that they defy description - this is one of them. Read it. ~JenMorrioghan
Burning Bridges
(PG)
After his fight with Cable in X-Force #25, Magneto
contemplates in the differences in their ideals. Just a vignette--not a terribly good one, but I think there's a germ of insight in there somewhere. At the very least, there's a decent metaphor.
By The Lake
(PG-13)
Bishop and Cable find common ground and surprising
comfort in each other on a very strange night... Written for the 'Strange Pairings' challenge on OTL, and my first piece of slash (although completely non-graphic, to the point of being 'off-camera' entirely). It's spawned a couple of sequels, In The Bushes by Kaylee and On The Stairs by DuAnn Cowart. We've taken to calling it the Prepositional Phrase series. :)
When Alicia told me she was writing this story as a response to the Strange Pairings Challenge on OTL, I was a bit surprised (understatement). However, I must say, not only is it plausible and well written (as if there was any doubt), it is also a meaningful story that will make you think. ~JenMorrioghan
Confessional
(PG-13)
Cable has a conversation with a psychiatrist about the
burdens he bears. An attempt at a realistic piece dealing with a character who could easily be called the poster boy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Initially intended to be a series, but at this point, most of the research I did for this (and the original character that appears within) will likely be put to use in the 'Reconstruction' series.
Conversation Over Hot And Sour
Soup
(PG)
Meet Minerva Parker:
associate professor, mutant clairvoyant, and Cable's very own 'Delphic
Oracle'. My first attempt at a completely gratuitous original character. Minerva Parker, precognitive professor, will be making more appearances, hopefully sooner rather than later.
Minerva is one of the most interesting original characters I've seen. One I would love to see appear again. :) ~JenMorrioghan
Drowning Sorrows
(PG-13)
After the revelation that he's the real Nathan
Christopher, Cable's having trouble coping, and Domino tries to help. A characterization piece to go with the freaky experiment that was 'Beyond The Pale'. I'm going to have to start examining this tendency of mine to get Cable drunk. I suspect it's my way of reducing his inhibitions, a colossal task under any circumstances.
In The Still Of The
Night
(PG-13)
Masquerading as
Domino, Copycat reflects on how 'difficult' her job has become--and how
dangerous it is to fall in love with your target. Written in about the space of a half-hour, while I was waiting for beta-comments on a much longer story which had taken me several days to write. This one wound up getting more feedback, I remember; it was a very interesting contrast.
Land Of The
Living
(PG-13)
Searching for
X-Force at the Colossal Man festival, Cable finds himself caught up in the
festivities, and nearly loses himself along the way. Set between the panels of X-Force #75, and somewhat inspired by hearing about the problems at the latest Woodstock festival.
Promise
(PG)
At Tyler Dayspring's funeral, the student becomes the
teacher as Sam tries to help Cable through his grief. My very first short story; a tweaked version of it, actually.
Shadows
(PG-13)
In the wake of the battle in Latveria with Stryfe and X-
Man, an exhausted Cable is wracked with self-doubt that manifests in a
very...unusual way. Probably the only story I will ever write concerning that execrable Cable/Stryfe/X-Man crossover, 'Blood Brothers'. I'm still a little embarassed that I acknowledged its existence, but the story itself isn't bad, I suppose.
Welcome The Sun
(PG)
Domino finds Cable watching the sunrise one morning, and
he makes a surprising revelation. Written on--you guessed it, a train. What is it about me and trains? "I've got writer's block? I know! I'll go jump on the subway!" ;) The train in this case was a commuter train back into Toronto, early in the morning, so perhaps the theme of this story had something to do with me watching the sun coming up over Lake Ontario--I wouldn't be surprised.
A very powerful look at the depths of this character. ~JenMorrioghan
You Said You Wanted A
Revolution
(PG)
Cable walks through a
city, seeing both its public face and the shadows beneath the surface. Something of a political statement, I suppose you'd call this. Since the vast majority of you undoubtedly have zero interest in Canadian politics, that's all I'll say. The story does stand well on its own, I think.
