Nocturnes

This was yet another series that spawned itself from a one-shot. Nothing unusual for me, of course, but rarely do I have a series which insists on ending in a manner so completely different from what I had planned.

Sometimes I look at this, and then at the Paladin Trilogy, and wonder which is actually darker. The two share something besides the tone, actually; because of how this ended, I made a decision to end the Paladin Trilogy a little differently than I'd planned. (And no, I'm not spilling the details about the original plan. At least not here.;)

This was a painful series to write at times. When I finally finished it, I felt almost like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I sometimes wonder why I continued it, all things considered, but there are just some stories that suck you in and won't let go. The ones that take the bit in their teeth and run are hard to resist, especially when you're like me, and not possessed of a lot of willpower in that area.

Someday, I'll continue this. Magneto's tale is still left to be told--I never intended to leave it where I did forever. There's too much potential left to explore. One 'movement' is done, but the story itself is far from over. I suppose this is where I insert my usual refrain..."So many stories, so little time.."

Did you find yourself reaching for the kleenex box, reading this? If you did, I'd love to hear about it . ;)--Alicia

This series completely blew me away when it was first released. What Alicia has done here is astounding. She takes you into the hearts and souls of these characters, and breaks your heart in the process. I'm not ashamed to say I cried when I first read it. It still has the power to make me weep. ~ JenMorrioghan

Water For The Dead
(PG-13)
After Domino is killed in battle, Cable is overcome with grief. This was the beginning of the series, one of my 'four-hour-wonder' fics. I appreciate it when they're obliging enough to flow out into the Wordperfect window with so little hassle. The title, for anyone who may be wondering, is actually a 'Dune' reference...

The Bondage Of Sorrow
(PG-13)
Magneto, the man partially responsible for Domino's death, tries to deal with the horrific reality of a psi-link accidentally formed between him and Cable that day. It was the addition of Magneto that turned this into a series. This was the first time I actually wrote him in any kind of a major role, and I found him very fascinating.

Where Anger Bleeds
(PG-13)
Xavier tries to confront Cable about the psi-link with Magneto, but Nathan is in no mood to listen. I was on a bit of a 'down-on-Xavier' kick at the time I was writing this series; I'm hoping it's not too blatant, but then again, it's justified, darn it! I appreciate the character, but he's interesting because he's flawed and three-dimensional. ;)

Just A Stretch Of Mortal Time
(PG-13)
Logan and Cable clash in the Danger Room--and not in a program. Ah... I don't think I'll ever tire of good, old-fashioned Logan and Cable head-butting. There's just something about a pair of alpha males holding grudges... ;)

Memento Mori
(PG-13)
Scott's attempt to get through to his son has tragic results. Scott and Nathan's relationship has become one of my most enduring obsessions. It's what shapes this fic and gives it its context, although it's not the major theme here.

The World In Shadow
(PG-13)
Rachel Summers comes to Magneto in astral form, to persuade him to help her brother. A transition piece, really, although it served as an opportunity to explore Magneto's thoughts on the situation a little farther.

The City Of The Evening Star
(PG-13)
Lost in his own mind, Cable finds his heart's desire--or does he? Here's where my fondness for wild imagery and mindscapes took centre stage. I feel like I owe a thank-you to the excellent Canadian band the Tea Party, for the song that inspired this fic. It's not a songfic, mind you--read it and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Watched You Fall
(PG-13)
One of Cable and Domino's 'children' sits at his bedside, trying to deal with her fear and her own feelings of guilt over Domino's death. It occurred to me at this point in the series that I hadn't dealt with X-Force's reaction to the situation yet. This was my attempt to redress that, just a little.

Cry In The Wilderness
(PG-13)
Magneto and Jean Grey descend into Cable's mind to try and bring him out of his coma, but they aren't prepared for what they find... Again, the imagery takes over, but Magneto and Jean's interaction is the highlight of this fic, I think.

Cast Your Soul To The Sea
(PG-13)
The final confrontation between Cable and Magneto, and a stunning decision. The finale. This is where events took a surprising turn; I suppose I could have written the ending I'd intended anyway, but this felt right, in a heartbreaking sort of way.

Alter-Nocturne: Daybreak
(PG-13)
What would have happened if Cable's temporal abilities had kicked in that day on Genosha and let him see what was about to happen to Domino? How would the course of events been changed? A birthday present for Lynx, and an alternate take on the whole Nocturnes storyline.
